• Analyze technical problems arising in optical metrology, manufacturing, and integration and develop optimal strategies for addressing them.
• Understand, support, and improve existing technologies and investigate, develop, and implement new optical metrology technologies.
• Support the fabrication and testing of a variety of optical components (plano, spherical, on- and off-axis aspherical or even freeform shapes), optical assemblies (doublets, etc…) and opto-mechanical assemblies.
• Be an expert in optical interferometry and related testing, including the design and use of Computer Generated Holograms (CGH).
• Have a demonstrated experience in developing comprehensive metrology error budgets to achieve the lowest level of measurement uncertainty.
• Have an extensive knowledge of optical tolerancing and requirements.
• Be familiar with standard optical manufacturing techniques such as optical generating, grinding, CNC machining or SPDT, polishing and sub-aperture finishing processes (CCP, IBF and/or MRF).
• Make the measurement process more repeatable and efficient by automating the data collection and/or the metrology procedures.
• Represent the organization as a prime optical metrology technical contact on feasibility studies, program reviews and/or customer presentations as requested.
• Guide and train support personnel in the setup and the documentation of the metrology equipment as well as the fixturing of the measurement process.
• Provide DfX information to the Design team to account for metrology challenges early-on in the product development cycle to optimize the release to production of challenging, cutting edge optics with high yields.
• Participate in the xFMEAs and other risk mitigation activities to assess the optical metrology risks in relation to specifications, manufacturing processes, tooling/fixtures, opto-mechanical tolerances and the environment.
• Lead development activities when creating new- or modifying existing- test equipment including cost and schedule estimates for acquiring and validating the metrology equipment.
• Determine and develop test specifications, methods and procedures. Perform tests and troubleshoots assemblies and/or final systems.

• BS (MS or Ph.D. preferred) in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics or equivalent.
• Optical metrology or manufacturing experience.
• Knowledge of optical tolerancing, uncertainty budget analysis and requirements.
• Optical Design and Wavefront sensing experience desired.
• Software packages: CodeV and/or Zemax, Matlab, Python, FRED.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis and Design of Experiments required.
• Experience with commercially available interferometry systems (ex. Zygo, 4D) and analysis software (ex. Matlab, MetroPro) required.
• Hands on experience in assembling, aligning and testing optical systems desired.
• Experience in the design of metrology systems for manufacturing is a strong advantage.
• Direct experience in architecture and design of complex optical and opto-mechanical systems desired.
• Tasks include specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, instrumentation, software and tooling/fixturing. Developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures.
• Understanding of mechanical design and tolerances in relation to optical performance and tolerances is desired (using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD or the e-Drawings viewer).
• Ability to create custom test programs to integrate instruments to a test station using LabVIEW, C, MatLab or VB programming languages is desired to automate the data collection and analysis.
• Strong communication skills, technical writing skills, project management skills, and analytical skills for an efficient communication with technicians, engineers and management.
• Must exhibit the ability to analyze complex technical situations and resolve issues, apply appropriate engineering problem solving, and keep the metrology development timetable on schedule.
• High level of initiative, judgment, and keen problem solving skills to resolve complex and diverse technical issues.
